In a press release published on its website and titled "Defense of the agents of the city of Saint-Raphaël in the face of an attack", the City and its mayor Frédéric Masquelier "condemn in the strongest possible terms the odious remarks made publicly (on Facebook, Editor's note) by Emmanuel Bonnemain, opposition councilor in Fréjus, against the municipal agents of Saint-Raphaël, due to his failure to register as an official during the July 14 parade" .
"Total support for city officials"
The City stated: "Comparing the personnel responsible for security and the smooth running of the parade to the militiamen of the National Revolution, to Mussolini's fascists or even to Hitler's SS constitutes an unspeakable excess, a serious insult and a profoundly unworthy attack against women and men who were only doing their job. The City of Saint-Raphaël reaffirms its full confidence in its agents, its total support, and strongly opposes any attempt to exploit them or to undermine their honor. It always stands alongside those who work, with professionalism and discretion, for the security and success of the events, and reserves the right to take legal action in the face of this undoubtedly premeditated excess."
On his Twitter account, the mayor of Fréjus, David Rachline, also expressed his "total support for the agents of the City of Saint-Raphaël who worked with great professionalism to offer holidaymakers a national celebration that lives up to the greatness of our country and the expectations of our fellow citizens."
